As best I recall, Oakes ran as a Republican. I think Vanover was there under a previous Democratic system. They both are generally good men and try to do the right thing, at least I believe so. I'm sure they make mistakes and such, but both are pretty decent people and someone that Wise County should be proud of.
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.

I know Gene very well and IMO whenever Mr. Oakes decides to step down, he should be next in line for Sheriff...
I think in general the Sheriffs in Wise Co. are good people...you would have to be to work for the money they work for.
In a lot of ways, Gene does run the sheriffs office, and Ronnie is the political figure-head. Not saying anything bad about them. It was a sad day when Gene left the system to to work elsewhere and a good day when he came back.

I seem to recall something about a large fraud in some of the federal programs. Got any idea when Dickenson will get there money? Why should the rest of the Country have to pay cause Dickenson built in a flood zone?
HMMM I don't know what you are talking about please explane. The Fraud "Operation Big Coon Dog" had to do with people (i think BOS but not 100% sure) were accepting bribs from contractors on bidding for Flood releafe Money which has nothing to do with Dickenson County Consoladation. As far as building in the flood plain the school was built before the area was declared a flood plane and By Federal Law Public building built in a flood plain can receve Fed Money to relocate out of the flood plain the only question was if other schools that were not in the flood plain could be housed in the new school. That question was put to the COE and after about a year and a half the offical word came down that they could about 6 months ago there was a bond issue for the 5% that Federal money would not pay. In all honisty I have not heard anything new on DC consoladation since then. I think for the most part DC is doing things the right way (Numeras public hearing befor the disison was made, as well as studys on a One Two and Three school soulution) and getting the financing worked out before hand. The way DC is handeling there consoladation should be a model for what Wise Co. should work like. This does not mean the Wise should have 1, 2,3,6,or 8 High schools it means that DC did not jump off the deepend with consoladation it has been in the works for 3 or 4 years and it will most likley be another 4 or 5 years before the school ever opens. What I am saying is Wise should take there time and do things right

One more thing you ask you question and it is valid my answer is that the school was built before the area was a flood plain and it is federal law that public buildings in a flood plain can be relocated (Can not be built in a flood plain)
Now hear is my equaly fair question. If Wise Co. wants to accept out of County students that is there dission wheather to pick up the 20% of the cash the state does not provide However what is the state doing providing 80% of the cash for out of state students what are the rest of the states tax payers doing footing that bill?
Very good point Counts. At least the family of Russell county students at St. Paul are paying Virginia taxes. What about the Ky students in Wise County schools? They may pay some VA sales taxes occasionally, but no VA income taxes and definitely no local property taxes. The differential between the actual amount received from the VA funding formula per student (with no local tax contribution) and the actual cost per pupil is even more when considering the OUT-OF-STATE students in Wise County schools. This issue might come back to haunt us more quickly than some might think. I mean why should Wise Countians subsidize the education of anyone from outside the County and especially those from out-of-state. Another law suit could result from this issue as well......
......and I thought truth was universal. Silly me......
And a lot of that will have to be addressed.
Like i was stating folks. Wise County is strapped. I don't want to see any jobs lost. None at all. But we have to face a few things to.
At what point and time, do we begin to lose other services?
Something is gonna have to give. Either increase in businesses or taxes.
I said it a long time back. This was bigger. And some of the reason.
Wise County is facing some very hard times economically, as is many other counties. With no easy fixes.
There is a lot of things that i am afraid may be jeopardized, in the near future.
But we have some rough times ahead, unless something begins to change economically.
And i think that is one cold hard fact. We all know.
